Barcode Lookup: How to Identify Any Barcode

If you have a barcode and want to know what product it belongs to, you need a barcode lookup tool. Here is a complete guide on how barcode databases work, what you can (and cannot) look up, and the best tools to use.

What is Barcode Lookup?

A barcode lookup (or barcode checker) is the process of scanning or typing the numbers beneath a barcode into a database to retrieve the associated product information.

It is a common misconception that barcodes inherently contain product names, prices, or descriptions. They do not. A standard retail barcode is simply a unique string of numbers (like a license plate). To know what the "license plate" belongs to, you must look it up in a database.

How Barcode Databases Work

When a company creates a product intended for retail sale, they purchase a block of unique barcode numbers from GS1 (the global barcode standards organization). GS1 maintains the central registry of all authentic retail barcodes in the world.

When you use a barcode lookup tool, the software is cross-referencing your barcode number against GS1's registry or a crowdsourced product database to find:

  • The Product Name
  • The Manufacturer or Brand Owner
  • Product Category
  • Occasionally, pricing data (if the database aggregates retailer information)

Types of Barcodes You Can Look Up

Not all barcodes can be looked up globally. You can only perform a global lookup on standardized retail barcodes. Internal logistics barcodes will not return results on public databases.

Can Be Looked Up

  • ✅ UPC-A & UPC-E: North American retail.
  • ✅ EAN-13 & EAN-8: Global retail products.
  • ✅ ISBN: Books and publications.
  • ✅ GTIN-14: Outer carton trade items.

Cannot Be Looked Up Globally

  • ❌ Code 128: Used for internal inventory.
  • ❌ Code 39: Used for asset tracking.
  • ❌ FNSKU: Amazon's proprietary internal barcodes.
  • ❌ Custom QR Codes: Unless they encode a specific web URL.

Free Barcode Checker Tools

At BarcodX, we specialize in generating barcodes. Because we don't maintain a product database, we do not currently offer a barcode lookup service. However, if you need to check a product, we recommend the following external services:

  • GS1 GEPIR / Verified by GS1: The official, most authoritative database. It will tell you the exact company that legally registered the barcode.
  • BarcodeLookup.com: A massive crowdsourced database that often provides product images, descriptions, and store links.
  • UPCitemdb: Another free tool for checking UPC and EAN codes against millions of products.

Note: Always verify high-stakes authenticity (like Amazon seller requirements) directly through the GS1 database.
